Chief geriatrician of the Ministry of Health Olga Tkacheva spoke about the risk of a "cascade of fractures" in osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease in which the volume of bone mass is reduced and its quality is impaired, which leads to bone fragility and the risk of fractures.
“Half of people who have at least one fracture as a result of osteoporosis have a second fracture within two years. Such repeated fractures are called a “cascade of fractures” or a “domino effect.” After the first fracture, the risk of developing a second one increases three times, after the second - It is very difficult to stop this cascade," said Olga Tkacheva, chief freelance geriatric specialist of the Russian Ministry of Health.
Osteoporosis is dangerous because it may not manifest itself for years, which is why it is called the "silent disease". With age, the risk of its development increases, especially in women after menopause.
Therefore, Tkacheva called the main measures to prevent the development of the disease and reduce the risk of fractures:
- Discuss with your doctor risk factors for osteoporosis and a set of necessary examinations;
- Check the level of vitamin D, correct its level in case of deficiency, having agreed with the doctor on a prophylactic dose of vitamin D3;
- Eat foods that contain calcium. With its deficiency, the risk of osteoporosis is increased;
- Do physical exercises so as not to lose bone and muscle mass. We need not only cardio (walking, swimming), but also strength exercises (at least with your own weight).
