Vučić called the condition for Serbia to impose sanctions against Russia

Belgrade may impose sanctions on Russia if there is a threat to the existence of Serbia, President of the Republic Aleksandar Vučić said on the air of the Prva TV channel.

“As long as there is no existential threat to Serbia and its citizens, we will pursue the policy determined by the National Security Council. If something changes, we will openly tell the citizens about everything. I am proud that we have been pursuing an independent policy for 240 days,” Vučić said (quoted from Evening News).

He noted that Serbia owes nothing to Russia, but remembers what Moscow did in 2015, and remembers how Russia and China protect the integrity of Serbia in the UN.

Serbia is one of those countries that did not impose sanctions on Russia after the start of the military operation in Ukraine. In early October, Ukrainian Ambassador to Belgrade Volodymyr Tolkach said that it was increasingly difficult for Kyiv to understand the arguments of Serbia, which refused to impose sanctions against Russia. In response, Vučić said he would not allow foreign diplomats to "brazenly put pressure" on Serbia.

According to Interior Minister Alexander Vulin, Serbia's physical existence depends on friendship with Russia, and the country's future is in good relations with it. “No one who loved Russia hated Serbia, but everyone who hated Russia hated Serbia,” he said.

Despite the refusal to impose sanctions, Serbia joined the resolution of the UN General Assembly condemning Russia's actions in Ukraine, and also did not recognize the results of the referendums in the Donbass.
